Started in 2007, the prolific shorts-and-a-feature festival is one of LA’s most powerful creative engines. Two years in a row New Filmmakers’ shorts have been shortlisted for Academy Awards nominations: Inocente in 2012 and Record Play in 2013. Inocente went on to win the Oscar for best documentary short, and Record Play is in feature development with a producer of American Hustle.
NewFilmmakers shorts often go on to win Student Academy Awards, including Equestrian Sexual Response and Narco Corrido and NewFilmmakers features, like Friended to Death, consistently land distribution deals. Zaj Batmanglij premiered his first short, The Recordist at NewFilmmakers, and went on to become one of the most promising indie writer/directors in Hollywood.
Besides its track record, what sets NewFilmmakers apart is that it’s a non-profit organization. Its mission is to provide a platform for independent filmmakers who don’t have the resources to promote themselves. Like MyTeeVee, NewFilmmakers is dedicated to the democratization of filmmaking – to leveling the playing field between studios and true indie artists.
”Everything we do is dedicated to highlighting emerging filmmakers from around the world,” says Larry Laboe, executive director of New Filmmakers, “from mentorship to the festivals to setting up interviews for our filmmakers on Moviemaker.com, we’re about increasing access for everyone.”
NewFilmmakers holds monthly screenings at the AT&T Center which include around 8-10 short films and one feature. The films are screened in blocks, so you can pick and choose which block you want to view, or view them all. With a lounge and an open bar, the events are a sort of clubhouse of budding filmmakers.
“The reason our events are so cool is that they’re built around being social,” says Laboe, “and our prices ensure that no is left out.” Tickets to individual programs (there are three a night) run $5, while all-night passes are $15. Each program draws about 350-400 attendees, with many more mingling in the lounge throughout the night.
Since the missions of MyTeeVee and NewFilmmakers are so similar it makes sense for us to combine forces to provide all you cinephiles a living community to get films made. NewFilmmakers is offering a two-for-one discount code for MyTeeVee members to this Saturday’s monthly screening! [WATCH TRAILERS HERE]
